Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient operating of rollers and/or compactor in underground metalliferous mines including:

conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations

carrying out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures

applying appropriate lifting techniques to remove items from path of plant

driving and operating the roller/compactor to site conditions and compacting materials requirements

applying safe work practices and identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues

applying problem solving and troubleshooting techniques

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the operation of rollers and/or compactor in underground metalliferous mines that meets all of the required outcomes including;

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

demonstrates completion of operating roller/compactor underground that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

setting up demarcation of work area

use of warning devices and manoeuvres when other personnel are in the work area

demonstrating the correct procedure for parking in stockpiles and on an incline

compacting haul roads

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when operating rollers/compactors underground:

dangers of open or uncompacted excavations or trenches

steepness of grades, as specified by the manufacturer

equipment processes, technical capability and limitations

geological and technical data (basic)

mine operational systems

signs of operator fatigue and how it should be managed

primary and secondary ventilation
